Fecal Matter Transplant for C Diff
If you’ve been diagnosed with C. diff and it returns after rounds of antibiotics to treat it, your gastroenterologist may recommend a fecal matter transplant. To be eligible for a FMT, you must have had three different C. diff infections that resisted antibiotic treatment.
Preparing for a FMT is similar to preparing for a colonoscopy. Those on antibiotics must stop taking them 48 hours before the procedure. An anti-diarrhea medication is administered a few hours before the procedure. While under anesthesia, stool from a healthy donor is infused into your colon with a colonoscope, the same device used in a colonoscopy. The healthy stool will transfer beneficial, balanced bacteria to your colon, restoring the compromised stool and stopping the recurrence of C. diff.
